On July 27, 1794, a pivotal event in the French Revolution unfolded.
Antoine-Christophe Merlin and other conspirators initiated the Thermidorian Reaction, a revolt that ultimately resulted in the fall of Maximilien de Robespierre. Robespierre had been a leading figure in the Reign of Terror, a period marked by mass executions and political purges that began as a means to protect the revolution from its enemies.
The guillotine became a symbol of this era, claiming thousands of lives. The Thermidorian Reaction was a turning point. Disillusioned by Robespierre’s increasing autocracy and the rampant fear and executions, Merlin and his allies successfully arrested him and his closest supporters. This rebellion led to Robespierre’s execution the following day.
The fall of Robespierre marked the end of the Reign of Terror, paving the way for a more moderate phase of the French Revolution. This crucial moment highlighted the volatile nature of revolutionary politics and the constant struggle for power.
