California: Weird & Interesting State Facts

Transcript:

Welcome to California—the Golden State. Sure, it’s known for Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and beautiful beaches, but underneath the glitz and sunshine, California is packed with strange laws, natural oddities, and things you won’t find anywhere else in the country.

Let’s kick things off with some of California’s weird laws. In Los Angeles, it’s illegal to lick a toad. No joke—this law was passed to stop people from getting high off psychedelic toads. In Blythe, if you’re wearing cowboy boots, you legally need to own at least two cows. And in San Francisco, it’s against the law to store anything other than a car in your garage—even though everyone does it!

Now for the natural side of things. California is home to the world’s tallest tree—a redwood named Hyperion that stands over 380 feet tall. But you’ll never find it—it’s hidden to protect it from damage. Then there’s the Salton Sea, a massive accidental lake formed by a flood in 1905 that’s now one of the weirdest, eeriest natural sites in the country.

What makes this state totally unique? It’s the only state with both a Death Valley (the hottest place on Earth) and Mount Whitney, the highest point in the Lower 48. It’s also the birthplace of the internet, In-N-Out Burger, and fortune cookies!

From illegal toad-licking to forgotten inland seas, California is a land of extremes—and some truly wild facts. Drop a comment with your favorite, and don’t forget to subscribe for more weird state stories!
