 Born in Iowa and raised in Oregon, Herbert Hoover overcame early adversity, using his intellect and determination to graduate from Stanford University as an engineer. His successful career in mining and business led to heroic international humanitarian efforts during World War I, where his efficient management of food aid saved countless lives.

Elected in 1928, Hoover’s term was dominated by the onset of the Great Depression. Despite attempts to stabilize the economy through government efficiency and public-private partnerships, his administration struggled to mitigate the worst economic crisis in American history. Criticized for his response, his efforts were overshadowed by the New Deal policies of his successor, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Hoover and his wife Lou Henry’s fluency in Mandarin Chinese, learned during his years in China. This allowed them unique privacy in the White House, speaking Mandarin when they wanted their conversations to remain confidential. Hoover also holds the distinction of being the first president born west of the Mississippi River.
