Idaho: Potatoes, Mystery Lakes, and Laws That’ll Make You Blink

Transcript:

Welcome to Idaho—famous for its potatoes, sure—but don’t be fooled. This rugged northwestern state is full of strange stories, natural wonders, and a few laws that are downright bizarre.

Let’s start with some of Idaho’s weird laws. In the city of Pocatello, a smile isn’t just encouraged—it’s required. That’s right, it’s technically illegal to frown or be gloomy in public. And in Tamarack, it’s illegal to buy onions after dark without a permit. Strange? Yes. Enforced? Probably not—but these quirky laws are still on the books!

Now let’s talk natural oddities. Idaho is home to Shoshone Falls, often called the “Niagara of the West.” It’s actually taller than Niagara Falls! But even more mysterious is Lake Pend Oreille, one of the deepest lakes in the U.S., rumored to be home to a sea monster named “Paddler.” Locals claim they’ve seen a serpent-like creature swimming just below the surface.

So what makes Idaho truly unique? It’s the only state seal designed by a woman—artist Emma Edwards Green in 1891. And while potatoes are the state’s claim to fame, Idaho also produces massive amounts of trout, lentils, and—surprisingly—precious gems. In fact, it’s nicknamed the Gem State and has one of the richest varieties of gemstones found anywhere in the country.

From monster sightings to mandatory smiles, Idaho proves it’s more than just spuds. Like, comment, and subscribe for more weird and wonderful facts from all 50 U.S. states!
