  James Garfield, a scholar and reformer. Born in a humble log cabin in Orange Township, Ohio. James Garfield’s journey from a small farm to the White House was fueled by his education at Williams College where he embraced abolitionist ideals transitioning from the wig party to become a key figure in the Republican party.

His political career was deeply rooted in a strong anti-slavery stance, beginning in the Ohio State Senate and continuing through his long tenure in the us. House of Representatives Garfield’s presidency, however, was dramatically brief. He served only 200 days before his life was tragically cut short by an assassin’s bullet marking one of the shortest presidencies.

Despite this, he left a mark with his strong advocacy for civil service reform and education, striving to unify the Republican party and promoted advances in agricultural technology. During his short time in office, Garfield’s intellectual abilities were exceptional. He was ambidextrous, capable of writing Greek with one hand and Latin with the other, and stood as the nation’s first left-handed president.
