Maryland: Crabs, Colonial Quirks, and Some Seriously Strange Facts

Transcript:

Welcome to Maryland—the Old Line State! It may be small in size, but Maryland is packed with history, charm, and a long list of weird and wonderful facts that make it stand out in a big way. Let’s start with some weird laws.

In Baltimore, it’s illegal to take a lion to the movies. In Rockville, swearing on a street or sidewalk is technically against the law. And in the entire state, fortune tellers can be fined or jailed if they pretend to predict the future “for fraudulent purposes.” So psychics—beware!

Now for some unusual natural and historical landmarks. Maryland is home to Assateague Island, where wild horses roam freely along the beaches. No one’s quite sure how they got there—some say they’re descendants of shipwreck survivors. And speaking of the sea, Maryland is famous for its blue crabs, and nowhere celebrates them like the National Hard Crab Derby in Crisfield. Yes, it’s a real crab race.

So what makes Maryland truly unique? It’s the birthplace of the U.S. national anthem—Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” after watching the Battle of Fort McHenry in Baltimore. It’s also one of the only states where you can ski in the morning and sail in the afternoon—thanks to its diverse geography from mountains to coastline.

From wild horses and blue crab races to bizarre movie rules, Maryland is full of fun surprises. Like, comment, and subscribe for more weird and interesting facts from all 50 U.S. states!
