Today in History: July 26, 1956- The Andrea Doria Sinks

On July 26, 1956, a tragic maritime disaster occurred. The Italian passenger liner Andrea Doria sank after colliding with the Swedish vessel Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket in the Atlantic Ocean. The collision led to a massive evacuation effort, but tragically, 51 people lost their lives.

The accident happened due to heavy fog and navigational errors from both ships. Despite modern radar systems, misunderstandings about the other ship’s position led to the fatal collision. The rescue operation was dramatic, involving numerous ships and helicopters working through the night to save the majority of the 1,706 passengers and crew.

This event highlighted the bravery and coordination of the rescuers. In the aftermath, stricter maritime navigation rules and improved radar protocols were implemented to prevent future disasters. While no one was criminally charged, the collision led to significant changes in maritime safety regulations.
