Kansas: Flat Lands, Flying Cows, and Fantastic Oddities

Welcome to Kansas—the Sunflower State! Known for prairies, tornadoes, and being the setting for The Wizard of Oz, Kansas is also full of weird laws, quirky landmarks, and a few surprises that even longtime residents might not know.

Let’s start with some weird laws. In Topeka, it’s illegal to scream in a haunted house. So if you’re easily spooked, you better keep it down. And in Dodge City, it’s against the law to spit on a sidewalk—so maybe think twice before chewing that gum. Oh, and if you ever thought about catching a fish with your bare hands? That’s illegal in Kansas too!

Now for the natural and unusual landmarks. Kansas is home to The World’s Largest Ball of Twine, located in Cawker City—and yes, it’s still growing thanks to annual “twine-a-thons.” And if you’re into mystery, check out the geographical center of the continental U.S., located near Lebanon, Kansas. There’s even a tiny chapel and a sign marking the exact spot.

What makes Kansas truly unique? It’s the only state where you can visit a space museum in the middle of the prairie—the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson. It holds one of the largest collections of U.S. and Russian space artifacts in the world, including pieces from the Apollo 13 mission and a real V-2 rocket. Not what you’d expect to find in farm country, right?

And here’s something wild: in 1879, a tornado reportedly picked up a herd of cows and set them down—alive—over half a mile away.

From tornado tales and twine balls to silent screams in haunted houses, Kansas proves that flat doesn’t mean boring. Like, comment, and subscribe for more weird and interesting facts from all 50 U.S. states!
