[VIDEO] Delaware: Weird & Interesting State Facts
The First State… and One of the Strangest!
Transcript:
Welcome to Delaware—nicknamed “The First State” because it was the first to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787. But beyond its historic bragging rights, Delaware is home to some truly weird laws, unique landmarks, and first-of-their-kind oddities.
Let’s start with the laws. In Delaware, it’s illegal to whisper in church—seriously. Disrupting a religious service with whispers can technically land you a fine. Another strange one? It’s unlawful to serve alcohol in a nightclub if dancing is occurring on the premises. That’s right—Delaware once said no to combining drinks and dancing. And if you’re planning a Halloween prank, think twice—it’s illegal to trick-or-treat past 8 p.m.
Now, what about Delaware’s natural quirks? While it may be flat and tiny it does have an unusual stretch of coastline known as the Murderkill River. Despite the name, it’s a peaceful place today—“kill” just comes from the Dutch word for stream—but still, not your average river name.
So what makes Delaware truly one of a kind? It’s the only U.S. state without a national park, which is strange for a place that prides itself on being first. But it does have tax-free shopping, which is why people from nearby states love to cross the border. And it’s home to Fenwick Island, a beach town that was once mistakenly placed in Maryland and had to fight for its Delaware identity!
From whisper bans to spooky river names, this state proves that being small doesn’t mean being boring. Like, comment, and subscribe for more weird facts from all 50 states!
