Illinois: Land of Lincoln… and Some Seriously Strange Surprises
Transcript:
Welcome to Illinois! Most people know it as the home of Chicago, deep-dish pizza, and Abraham Lincoln—but this Midwest powerhouse is also packed with weird laws, quirky landmarks, and some truly unique claims to fame.
Let’s start with some weird laws. In Chicago, it’s technically illegal to eat in a place that’s on fire. Not sure who needed that reminder, but it’s there. In Galesburg, no one is allowed to “keep a smelly dog.” And in Normal, Illinois, it’s against the law to make faces at dogs. Apparently, canine dignity is serious business here.
Now, how about some strange natural features? Ever heard of the Cave-In-Rock? It’s a massive cave carved into limestone cliffs along the Ohio River. In the 1800s, it was used by river pirates and bandits—yes, actual pirates in Illinois! Then there’s Giant City State Park, where enormous sandstone formations create natural streets and passageways.
What makes Illinois truly unique? It’s the only state where a president and an alien reportedly came from. Abraham Lincoln lived most of his life in Illinois, but it’s also home to Roswell’s lesser-known cousin—the 2004 Tinley Park Lights, a mass UFO sighting seen by hundreds.
And let’s not forget: the world’s first skyscraper was built in Chicago in 1885, making Illinois a pioneer in modern architecture.
From outlawed fire-dining to mysterious lights in the sky, Illinois is full of oddities hiding in plain sight. Hit like, leave a comment with your favorite Illinois weird fact, and subscribe for more from our 50-state series!
