[VIDEO] Hawaii: Weird & Interesting State Facts
Hawaii: Paradise with a Side of Strange
Transcript:
Aloha from the only U.S. state made up entirely of islands, and one of the most beautiful places on Earth. But behind the beaches and hula skirts, Hawaii is packed with unique traditions, natural oddities, and some seriously strange laws.
Let’s start with those weird laws. In Hawaii, it’s illegal to put a coin in your ear. This law was originally aimed at street magicians, but it’s still on the books. Also, you can be fined for having more than one alcoholic drink in front of you at a time in some bars—double-fisting isn’t just frowned upon, it’s forbidden! And don’t feed the birds at the beach—many counties have banned it to protect native species.
Now let’s talk natural wonders. Hawai is home to Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. But get this—scientists believe Hawaii’s volcanic hot spot actually created the entire chain of islands, one fiery eruption at a time. Then there’s Mount Waialeale on Kauai—one of the wettest places on Earth, getting nearly 500 inches of rain per year.
So what makes this state one-of-a-kind? It’s the only U.S. state that was once a kingdom, complete with its own royal palace—ʻIolani Palace in Honolulu. Hawaii also has its own time zone, doesn’t observe daylight saving time, and is the only state that grows coffee, cacao, and vanilla commercially.
From royal palaces to outlawed magic tricks, Hawaii is full of fascinating contrasts. Like, comment, and subscribe to explore more weird and wonderful facts from all 50 U.S. states!
